Cambrian Ridge Golf Club
Known by avid RTJ Trail golfers as one of the most picturesque and challenging courses on the trail, Cambrian Ridge is just 50 miles south of Capitol Hill Golf Club. The Loblolly nine, with its gently rolling fairways, cathedral-like pines, and water-fronted greens, exudes a stately, Augusta-like quality. The Canyon nine, carved from former hunting grounds where deer blinds remain nailed to the hardwood, is a thrilling stretch of target-style golf with hole #1 being a 501-yard par four that drops 200 feet from tee to fairway. The Sherling nine may be the best nine on the entire trail. Drama takes center stage at Sherling's ninth hole which rises straight uphill past a deep ravine strewn with ochre boulders to a double green shared with the ninth on the Canyon nine.
Capitol Hill - The Legislator
*Course will be closed 2/1/25-8/31/25. Capitol Hill has been name the "#2 Public Golf Site in the U.S." by Golf World readers and deservedly so with 3 great courses and tour-quality practice facilities. The Legislator, a more traditional course than its Capitol Hill sibling courses, plays around stately pine trees and along a picturesque bluff, featuring elevation changes of more than 200 feet. You'll be amazed at the "Sky Bridge", a winding cart path that delivers you through 6 holes laid out around a native cypress swamp and back up the bluff to finish the course at Captiol Hill's spectacular clubhouse.
Grand National - Lake Course
With 12 holes playing along the shore of Lake Saugahatchee, Grand National's The Lakes Course is every bit as scenic as the Links. Not only is the quartet of par threes on the Lakes Course as good as any in the nation, but the island green 15th - the course signature hole, may be the single prettiest hole on the Trail. It stretches to 230 yards from the back tees and requires a shot to a two-tiered island green partially shaded by two hardwood trees for added beauty and challenge. One of the favorite holes is the par-4, dogleg-right 16th (250 to 334 yards), where players can reach the green from the tee, but the water and a large bunker await errant shots. The smart play is long iron from the tee past the trees on the right side, leaving a short iron over a the marsh guarding the front of the green.
Hampton Cove - Highlands Course
The Northern gateway to the RTJ Trail is Hampton Cove in Huntsville, a 54-hole facility with terrain that drastically changes from one side of the property to the other. The Highlands Course, which emulates a Scottish Links, is one of the gems of the Trail. Long-waving grasses and thousands of Japanese black pines, oaks, dogwoods, and crepe myrtles, plus an old mule barn beside the fifth hole enhance the beauty and challenge of the course. Like other Trail courses, the finishing holes are among the most scenic and challenging on the RTJ Trail with the holes carved through natural rolling terrain elevations.
Highland Oaks Golf Club
Highlands, the core nine, is relatively open, with several lakes in play. The peninsula green at the par-3 sixth has an elusive, beckoning quality. Marshwood has been made famous (or notorious) by its behemoth par-5 sixth, which stretches to 701 yards from the tips. The Magnolia nine is well-named: Specimen magnolia trees dot the higher ground, which is reached via a 1,000 foot long wooden bridge spanning a marsh filled with lichen-dappled trees.
Magnolia Grove - Crossings Course
The Crossings Course is a shotmaker's layout that winds through hilly terrain, natural wetlands and along generous fairways lined by dense oaks and pines. The course gets its name from the old railroad tracks at the site left during design and construction. The course plays mostly uphill and downhill over the front nine dotted with small water hazards. The teeth of the course is the back nine where more water hazards, marsh areas and sloping greens will challenge golfers of all skill levels.
Magnolia Grove - Falls Course
The property at Magnolia Grove includes creeks, marshland, and lakes, with each of the 36 holes carved from a thick forest of hardwood and pine. The highly-rated Falls Course is characterized by large, liberally contoured greens, massive cloverleaf bunkers and plays around more water hazards and marsh areas than its sister course The Crossings. The course is named for the small waterfall in view between the 9th and 10th holes. On the 10th, a 570-yard par-five, and possibly the most strategic hole on the course, a waterfall cascades across stair steps just beneath a tiered green that falls eight feet from front to back. Always challenging and very scenic, The Falls Course is always a memorable experience.
Oxmoor Valley - Ridge Course
This 54-hole facility was built on former mining land owned by U.S. Steel. Sculpted from the peaks and valleys of the Appalachians, the courses offer scenic forests, numerous creeks and challenging elevation changes. The Ridge Course, with its rolling fairways, dense hardwood surroundings, and precipitous 150-foot elevation changes, is incredibly scenic and photogenic. As a reminder of the site's former use, the green at the par-five 12th is buttressed by a shelf of exposed shale rock.
Silver Lakes Golf Club
Set on rolling terrain at the edge of Talladega National Forest between Anniston and Gadsden, Silver Lakes Golf Club features three championship nine holes with scenic views of the surrounding Appalachian Mountains. This facility is anchored by a number of strong par fours that play to pedestal greens perched 30 to 40 feet above fairway level. The Club features the most unique and aptly named nines on the RTJ Golf Trail: The Heartbreaker nine is dubbed by many as the most challenging nine on the Trail with three spectacular finishing holes. Hole numbers 7, 8, and 9 take you from the highest elevation on the property to the lowest. The 448-yard par-4 ninth with water rippling down the entire left side of the hole provides great views and challenge as the elevation drops toward the large green below. The Backbreaker nine, the last championship course to open on the Trail, is a photographer's dream boasting beautiful views of the Appalachian foothills from its elevated tees, wide fairways and demanding greens. The par-5 seventh, a 623-yard thriller (466 from the middle tees), brings water into play not once, but twice. The Mindbreaker, although slightly easier test than the other two courses, demands well thought-out shotmaking. Aptly named for the variety of uphill, downhill and sidehill approaches will have you second guessing shot decisions!
The Shoals - Fighting Joe
The Shoals Golf Club lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River and boasts two of the most unique and challenging courses on the Robert Trent Jones Trail. The Fighting Joe Course is aptly named from the Wheeler Dam, which is named in honor of General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Wheeler - the only Confederate General to attain the same rank later in the United States Army. This links-style course is simply good, straight-forward golf for players of all skill levels, but is long...really long, measuring over 8,000 yards from the back tees. With elevation change "assistance", you can see where you are going, the question is...can you get there? The par-5 17th hole is considered the signature hole on the course, but for many, the 18th hole playing along the edge of Wilson Lake on the Tennessee River will distract you with its beauty, if not its treachery.
Capitol Hill - The Senator
One of the most popular sites on the Trail, Capitol Hill in Prattville encompasses over 1,500 acres of golf and nature, allowing each of the three top-rated courses to be drastically different from each other. The Senator, a Scottish-Links style course, holds more than 140 pot-hole bunkers and mounds 20 to 40 feet in height, hiding the cart path or any other hole from view. The secluded settings of each hole will make it feel as if you are the player or group on the entire golf course! The Senator was named among the Top 10 New Courses in the nation by GOLF Magazine and hosts the LPGA's Epson Tour Guardian Championship each September, as well as many amateur tournaments, due to its design challenges and beauty.
Grand National - Links Course
Grand National Golf Club site by all reports was reported as "the single greatest site for a golf complex Robert Trent Jones, Jr. had ever seen". Built on 600 acre Lake Saugahatchee, 32 of the 54 holes wind along its shores. The cornerstone of the complex is The Links Course, which is without a single weakness. The course fairways are mostly open and players will be hitting many uphill and downhill shots to greens that are large and sloping. The lake comes into play on twelve holes, and there are several marsh areas that must be crossed. The par-four 18th is without a doubt the strongest finishing hole on the Trail. The drive must carry a corner of the Lake, while the approach is played to a shallow pedestal green shored up by a natural boulder bulkhead and surrounded by a cove.
Hampton Cove - River Course
Completely opposite in design is The River Course, the only Robert Trent Jones layout without a single bunker. The River Course is laid out on former soybean fields in the flood plain of the Flint River. The River is a throwback to the way courses were built long ago - the dirt was merely pushed up to create the greens and tees, leaving all else, including massive oak trees, as is. With water on 16 of 18 holes, The River Course will challenge the shot-making ability of golfers of all skill levels.
Lakewood Golf Club - Azalea Course
Lakewood Golf Club at Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa is open to anyone who enjoys playing golf in a 36 hole setting in beautiful Point Clear Alabama (Mobile). Established in 1947, Lakewood Golf Club is considered among the finest courses in the South and Top 5 on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The varying degree of challenge promises a memorable golf experience for both novice and highly experienced golfer alike. Where the Azalea Course is considered more challenging than the Dogwood Course, both pristinely conditioned courses can play to your liking depending on your selection of five teeing grounds per hole. The Azalea Course showcases classical architectural features such as natural sand waste areas, Scottish bulkhead walls and the azalea bushes that line many of the course's scenic holes. The signature 14th hole features an island green surrounded by sparkling lake and will challenge approach shots to this demanding par-5 hole.
Lakewood Golf Club - Dogwood
Lakewood Golf Club at Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa is open to anyone who enjoys playing golf in a 36 hole setting in beautiful Point Clear Alabama (Mobile). Established in 1947, Lakewood Golf Club is considered among the finest courses in the South and Top 5 on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The varying degree of challenge promises a memorable golf experience for both novice and highly experienced golfer alike. Where the Dogwood Course is considered slightly less challenging than the Azalea Course, both pristinely conditioned courses can play to your liking depending on your selection of five teeing grounds per hole. The Dogwood Course is built across rolling-terrain and more parkland style than Azalea with tree-lined fairways, lush landscaping and smaller undulating greens.
Oxmoor Valley - Valley Course
The Valley Course is dotted with picturesque lakes, beautiful rolling fairways, and stretches two miles downrange along a slender valley. The 18th hole, a 441-yard par-4, nicknamed "The Assassin", rises to a dramatic finish at the signature clubhouse just behind the green.
The Shoals - Schoolmaster
The Schoolmaster (named for President Woodrow Wilson who was responsible for getting Wilson Dam built on the Tennessee River and is known as "The Schoolmaster of Politics"), is more traditional golf with every hole in keeping with the natural topography along the Tennessee River. The course is heavily wooded, rolling, and spectacular while playing along the bluffs above the river. The beauty and challenge of the 18th hole playing along the high bluffs may be the signature hole, but the 2nd hole with sloping fairway and waterfall is a great hole and golfer favorite as well. First reports indicate The Schoolmaster may be a tougher course than Fighting Joe, but only time will tell. One thing's for sure, it's a shot maker's golf course with narrower fairways, tree lined greens, and still a length of nearly 8,000 yards! Make sure you have done your homework well, for The Schoolmaster will certainly test all your skills.

Golf Magazine called The Judge Course "1 of the 10 public courses in America worthy of hosting the U.S. Open" and the Zagat Survey of America's Top Golf Courses ranked it among the top 50 courses in America. The Judge offers stunning vistas alongside the 200-acre glistening back waters of the Alabama River. The first tee lies 200 feet above the fairway overlooking the Alabama River and the Montgomery skyline, and the course gets more challenging and scenic from there! With 14 holes adjoining the water, plus rolling fairways, a bulkheaded island green, and uphill and downhill shot-making across natural elevations, The Judge is described as simply magnificent and a must play.
Ross Bridge Golf Club
Top-rated Ross Bridge Golf Club is a parkland style course masterfully carved into the rolling terrain of Shannon Valley in south Birmingham. The course meanders through indigenous landscape with ten holes along the banks of two large lakes connected by a spectacular waterfall dropping 80 feet between the 9th and 18th greens. A gristmill at the waterfall reflects the history of this old steel mining site. The beauty and challenge of of each hole leads many golf industry experts, PGA Professionals and daily golfers to believe there is not one signature hole but eighteen. Like many of the RTJ Trail courses, the par-three holes are incredible. Considerable elevation changes combine with water and other natural obstructions to get your attention. Several of the front nine holes play along a higher ridge above the rest of the course, offering scenic course views. Number 17, a par-4, plays to a well-guarded green with water winding down the right side of the sloping hole. The background is a scenic view of the ninth and eighteenth holes with the waterfall tumbling between. On the ninth, players must decide which side of the split fairway to aim for - a shorter but more dangerous route along the water's edge, or opt for a safer play leaving a longer approach to the elevated green. Large green complexes provide many tempting pin locations that will test golfers' approach shot strategy.
Craft Farms Club - Cotton Creek Course
Featuring rolling fairways and large undulating greens, Cotton Creek at Craft Farms Golf Resort is very playable from the forward tees and a true championship challenge of over 7,000 yards from the tips. True to its Palmer design, this traditional 18-hole masterpiece was laid out to challenge rather than intimidate, with numerous risk/reward opportunities throughout. This Golf Digext 4-Star course, located in Gulf Shores, Alabama, features tree-lined, rolling fairways surrounded by lakes. The lush course is challenging for low handicap players but with five staggered tee boxes, it is a fun challenge for golfers at any level. Considering a risky shot to go for the green? Your bravery will be rewarded with the large undulating greens. The 6th Hole is the most challenging on Cotton Creek. With a well-placed tee shot over water to the fairway, the 2nd shot also requires a smart swing over more water to the green. A birdie on this hole delights anyone who rises to meet its challenge!
Craft Farms Club - Cypress Bend Course
Cypress Bend at Craft Farms Golf Resort boasts a 4-1/2 star rating by Golf Digest. This architectural masterpiece, features staggered tee boxes, sprawling bunkers, top quality putting surfaces and year–round lush conditions.
